Dr. Lerner is a writer, director, editor and cinematographer whose films have screened nationally and internationally in the prestigious Sundance Film Festival and in museums from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has also worked as a curator and programmer of film festivals from the Guggenheim in New York to CONACULTA in Mexico City. As a Professor of Media Studies at Claremont College in Claremont, CA he is actively involved as an educator, advocate, analyst and participant in the world of film and video.

Refugio (Refuge) is a short film that tells the stories of Amalia and Roberto, two Guatemalan refugees who fled on foot to the Mexican state of Campeche on the Yucatan peninsula. Like many other Guatemalan refugees (36,000 of them) Amalia and Roberto fled Guatemala's three decade long civil war where atrocities and civilian massacres were perpetrated by both the army and the guerrilla fighters. Narrated in the first person, the co-director of this documentary introduces us into the universe of these refugees who, despite their trauma, have reconstructed their lives, identities, and created a new community in Mexico.

Refugio (Refuge), es un cortometraje que cuenta la historia de Amalia y Roberto, dos refugiados Guatemaltecos que salieron de la península de Yucatán y llegaron caminando al estado de Campeche, México. Tal y como lo hacen muchos refugiados Guatemaltecos, Amalia y Roberto huían de tres décadas de guerra civil en su país en donde fueron testigos de atrocidades y masacres en contra de la población, perpetradas por las fuerzas armadas y la guerrilla. En el filme, narrado en primera persona, el codirector de este documental lleva a la audiencia a un universo desconocido donde estos refugiados, a pesar de su trauma, logran reconstruir sus vidas, cambian sus identidades y crean una nueva comunidad en México.

La selva negra (The Modern Jungle) is a portrait of globalization filtered through the fever dream of a Mexican shaman, Don Juan, who falls under the spell of a pyramid-scheme-marketed nutritional supplement. Juan's neighbor Carmen lives simply, in harmony with the land her martyred husband paid for with his life. This film documents their struggles and encounters with outside forces: from capitalism and commodity fetish, to the culture of cinema, and the directors of this film.
